The Japanese, who have pioneered miniaturization, have developed methods of genetic engineering which produce smaller, but genetically pure animals. Scientists are worried that these experiments might next be carried out on humans. Proponents claim that not only would it solve the crowded living conditions, but that food shortages would no longer be a problem.
Staff at Mount Lehman Llamas in British Columbia are looking into the possibility of importing some of the eight inch high llamas. A spokesman said “We estimate we should be able to have about four hundred per acre, and our feed bills would certainly shrink.” The biggest problem so far has been getting buckles small enough for the halters.
