SmarttNet kicks out SPAM

SmarttNet now offers enhanced control over SPAM and viruses for SmarttMail accounts, as if their regular shield wasn???t enough.

???Sure, all SmarttNet accounts come with SPAM control automatically installed, but this system will give more control to users who receive large amounts of mail per day. They???ll be able to decide what is and isn???t SPAM, because sometimes mail that is a sales pitch is important but doesn???t come through,??? explained CEO Saleh Tousi.

By having control over SPAM and virus settings, users will be able to set their own criteria for block and quarantine levels, ensuring that only what they specify will be labeled as SPAM. In other cases, tags can be applied to questionable mail and the subject lines will contain warnings that the letter may be irrelevant. White and black lists can be created to categorize incoming mail from certain addresses, regardless of whether they pass SPAM filtering. The system even has a spoof protection option so that cold mailers who forge the ???from??? address won???t be able to get through if the domain name is internal.

???We implemented the best software we could find for doing the job,??? explained Tousi. ???It does wonders for our general accounts, and it also gives clients the option of enabling their own criteria, so it works for everyone.???

SPAM filters operate by setting rules about what is likely to be junk mail and then assigning points based on those rules. For example, if a mail item contains the word ???discount???, then the SPAM filter will count that as being, say, two points. If the item also contains other junk-like characteristics, it would get more points. When it exceeds a certain limit, the filter knows not to include it in a person???s inbox.

???A user with enhanced control will be able to train the system as it learns what the client wants to keep or throw away,??? explained Tousi.

One way of training the system would be to set a quarantine level. The user will get notified when an e-mail has been quarantined, and will then have the option of accessing a separate area where all quarantined e-mails are stored. From there, the user can tell the system what to do with similar e-mails in the future.
